A Bumper Harvest of TCM Materials, but Encountering a Fall in Price in the Busy Season

Increase font size  Decrease font size Date:2014-11-19   Views:578

Now it is the new winter production season of traditional Chinese medicinal materials, but the market is not pleasing during this busy season and the drug market is continuously in the downturn. Prices of traditional Chinese medicinal materials, including chrysanthemum morifolium ramat, radix codonopsis, red ginseng, panax notoginseng, semen cuscutae and sesame, etc., have been falling, with a slow supply trend. Even the price of Cordyceps sinensis has already fell and only partial varieties maintain their high prices.

Winter is supposed to be the selling season for many moistening and nourishing traditional Chinese medicinal materials, but they encounter the market downturn. The price of radix codonopsis as well as red ginseng has been falling, and the supply will exceed demand in this winter; chrysanthemum morifolium ramat is very “close to civilian”, the price of which is also expected to fall due to its productivity. Price fall of panax notoginseng is not strange: its price has been at the low level because there is continuously new supply in the market and the market supply is abundant while the terminal demand is not expanded.

Some varieties are high in pricing, therefore dealers are cautious about the stocking, such as semen cuscutae; and some have inventories before the new production, and the new and old are stacked together, which will be difficult for the market to digest temporarily. There is a bumper harvest in new production of medicinal materials this year; however, the traditionally busy season does not encounter market enthusiasm, as introduced. However, Chinese patent medicines still sell well, as learned from the public benefit activity of Baiyunshan ZhongYi Pharmaceutical Diabetes Day.

New production of some varieties are delayed this year, coinciding with the Chinese leap month of September, but large varieties at ten thousand tons level or larger, such as radix codonopsis, Angelica sinensis, radix rehmanniae and salviae miltiorrhizae, have started the new production. There will be no good news for those varieties in a short period: the large influx of the new supplies to the market will generate a relatively large impact on the whole traditional Chinese medicinal materials market.
