Wellman declares US PET force majeure on PTA shortage

Wellman declared force majeure on PET deliveries out of its 400 kt/year plant in Pearl River, Mississippi, a source close to the company said Wednesday.

"Wellman put the allocation at 60% for all customers," the source said.

Wellman was short PTA due to a PTA force majeure and lower allocation from BP. From June 1, BP dropped its PTA allocation from 50% down 25% as the company was unable to restart half its plant in Cooper River, South Carolina, from a lengthy turnaround that had been scheduled to finish at the end of May.

BP had earlier declared force majeure on PTA deliveries and the 50% allocation from Decatur due to a tornado induced power outage April 27 that shut the plant.

Last week, a BP source said it expected to have the 1.25 mil mt/year Cooper River and 1 mil mt/year Decatur PTA plants running by June 10.
