US propylene stocks up 3.6% year on year at 1.47 bil lb at end of Q1

US propylene inventories at the end of first quarter of 2014 were 3.6% higher than year-ago levels and 1.5% above stocks at the end of the previous quarter, revised data from the American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers trade group showed late Wednesday.

Propylene inventories totaled 1.47 billion lb at the end of Q1, up 21 million lb compared with the end of Q1 2013 and a gain of 51 million lb on end of Q4 stocks, the data show. Polymer and chemical grade propylene inventories totaled 949 million lb at the end of the quarter, a 1 million lb rise compared with three months earlier.

First-quarter US propylene production totaled 7.02 billion lb, a drop of 63 million lb compared with Q4 2013 and a fall of 139 million lb compared with Q1 2013, AFPM said.

Propylene sourced from steam crackers, metathesis and propane dehydrogenation plants totaled 2.729 billion lb in Q1, a 9.11% drop from 3 billion lb in Q1 2013 and 6% dip from 2.906 billion lb in Q4 2013.

Full-year 2013 production totaled 29.208 billion lb, compared with 26.026 billion lb in 2012.
