US raw steel production up 1.5% week on week

US raw steel production moved up about 1.5% week on week due to gains in the Northeast and Great Lakes regions, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute.

The US produced about 1.84 million st of raw steel at an average capability utilization of 76.3% in the week ended April 26, compared with about 1.81 million st at 75.2% in the previous week. In the equivalent week last year, the US produced 1.84 million st at 76.7% capability utilization.

Northeast production rose from 207,000 st to 229,000 st, while Great Lakes production rose from 589,000 st to 621,000 st. Production fell from 238,000 st to 232,000 in the Midwest, 682,000 st to 665,000 st in the South, and 92,000 st to 88,000 st in the West.

Year to date, the US has produced about 30.27 million st at an average capability utilization of 76.1%. Last year at this time, the US had produced about 30.52 million st at an average capability utilization of 76.9%.
