US mill shipments up 6% in July from June, but YTD still down from 2012: AISI

US steel mills shipped 8.3 million st in July, up 6% from 7.8 million st in June and 5% from 7.9 million st in July 2012, according to American Iron and Steel Institute data released Monday.

Shipments from January through July totaled 55.7 million st, down 4% from 58 million st in the same period a year ago, the AISI data shows.

Cold-rolled coil shipments rose 9% in July to 972,037 st. Shipments of hot-rolled coil in July increased about 7% to nearly 1.8 million st and hot-dipped galvanized sheet and narrow strip shipments rose by about 1% in July to 1.2 million st.

Year-to-date, mill shipments of these products through July are down 5% for CRC, up 1% for HRC and down 11% for HDG sheet and strip.

US mills shipped 11% more rebar in July than in June, reaching 662,195 st. In the seven-month period, mills sold 10% more rebar than in the same period a year ago.

Shipments of structural shapes three inches and over were 540,531 st in July, up 6% from June, while year-to-date sales of these structural products are up 8% from 2012.

Figures include carbon, alloy and stainless products, AISI said.
