Year-to-date US coal production falls 6.6% through December 8: EIA

US coal production totaled about 20 million st in the week that ended Saturday, the Energy Information Administration said Thursday.

This production estimate, based on railcar loadings, is 1.4% lower than the previous week's estimate and 9.6% below the estimate for the comparable week in 2011.

Coal production east of the Mississippi River totaled about 8.5 million st in the most recent week, EIA said, while output west of the Mississippi totaled about 11.5 million st.

US year-to-date coal production totaled 960.2 million st through December 8, some 6.6% less than in the comparable year-to-date period in 2011, the agency said.
