Imports of methanol into Turkey in September fell 12.3% year on year to 44,387 mt, according to the latest data from the Turkish data agency Turkstat.

Azerbaijan was the largest exporter of methanol to Turkey, accounting for 13,282 mt.
Trinidad and Tobago replaced Egypt as the second-largest supplier of methanol to Turkey, sending 12,771 mt in September, up from 9,094 mt in September 2017.

Imports from Egypt declined to 4,351 mt in September, down 64% year on year.

Production at Methanex's Damietta methanol plant in Egypt totaled 128,000 mt in the third quarter, down 22% from Q2, the company said during its financial results presentation on October 24.

The supply of off-spec gas at the facility caused mechanical issues that resulted in lower production in Q3, Methanex said.

Methanex holds a 50% stake in the plant.

Meanwhile, Russian imports of methanol stood at 6,943 mt in September, from zero in September 2017.

Several market sources said new production at Russia's Shchekinoazot methanol site had been expected to target the Turkish market.

The new plant started production in early September and has a capacity of 450,000 mt/year.

The company owns and operates another 450,000 mt/year methanol plant at the same site.
