New Dutch-German power link's second circuit to go live Nov 10

The second circuit of the new German-Dutch power interconnector will go-live November 10, grid operators TenneT and Amprion said.

The two circuits of the new 380 kV cable between Doetinchem in the Netherlands and Wesel in Germany will boost transmission capacity by 1-2 GW, allowing more German surplus power to flow into the Dutch grid.
"In order to ensure a safe and secure operation of the new interconnector the first circuit will have to be temporarily taken out of operation to enable Amprion and TenneT to carry out essential measurements and calibrations of the protection systems," both TSO said in a statement on JAO Monday.

The exact dates will be published on the Entso-e transparency platform, it added.

The Netherlands is currently the biggest export market for Germany's power surplus with net 15.9 TWh flowing into the Dutch power grid so far this year, grid operator data based on physical flows.

Dutch power imports are up partly due to reduced nuclear output in Belgium.

Belgian and Dutch net power imports increased in H1 2018 with around 6 GW flowing on average each hour across those borders, data from grid operators TenneT and Elia shows.

Cross-border capacity between Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Germany/Luxemburg and Austria is optimized under the flow-based market coupling mechanism (FBMC).

In addition, two new DC interconnectors from Great Britain (1 GW Nemo to go live in January) and Denmark (0.7 GW Cobra delayed to Q3 2019) could further boost transmission capacity outside FBMC.
