Louisville, Kentucky — Production resumed Wednesday at Peabody Energy's Francisco mine in Gibson County, Indiana, less than two days after the mine was evacuated after a pocket of methane gas was encountered.
Charlene Murdock, spokeswoman for the St. Louis-based coal company, told S&P Global Platts in an email that "the abatement efforts at Francisco mine have progressed as planned and production has resumed."
A spokeswoman for the US Mine Safety and Health Administration did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
MSHA idled the mine Monday after Francisco miners drilled into an old works that released the methane, a highly explosive gas. There were no injuries.
Francisco produced about 1.1 million st in the first half of 2018 and 2.2 million st in 2017, according to MSHA.
