Weekly US coal train loadings flat this week, but up from a year ago

Coal train loadings were roughly flat in the week ended March 9, but were 10.6% higher than the year-ago week, according to weekly Surface Transportation Board data.

An average of 101.3 trains/day loaded during the week, up 0.8% from the prior week.

In the Powder River Basin, an average of 57.6 trains/day loaded, up 1.9% from the prior week and up 12.9% from a year ago.


Illinois Basin loadings averaged 8.2 trains/d, down 0.2% from the prior week and down 6.6% from the year-ago week.

Central Appalachia loadings averaged 16.6 trains/day, down 6.5% from last week but up 11.8% from last year, while Northern Appalachia loadings averaged 11 trains/day, flat with the prior week but up 9.3% from the year-ago week.

The loadings reflect data submitted weekly to the STB by CSX, Norfolk Southern, BNSF Railway and Union Pacific.
